Cunha has had an outstanding year, putting the ball in the net 17 times for the old gold and providing 6 assists on top of that.

Cunha’s exit leaves a significant void both in terms of goals and link up play. Wolves’ hierarchy now faces a pivotal summer, where the reinvestment of that €80 million will define the trajectory of both the club’s short term and long term ambitions.

With that out of the way, here are some replacements that Wolves have been linked to in the last few weeks:

Harvey Elliot [Liverpool]:

Harvey Elliott could be a decent fit for Vítor Pereira’s 3-4-2-1 system at Wolves, but he wouldn't be a like for like replacement for Matheus Cunha. Pereira’s setup relies heavily on structured build up play and disciplined positioning, particularly from the two attacking midfielders behind the striker, who must operate centrally and contribute both creatively and defensively. While Elliott has the technical ability, vision, and pressing work rate to thrive in such a role, he's naturally more suited to drifting wide and operating in looser systems with more positional freedom. His success would hinge on how well he adapts to the demands of a tighter, more disciplined shape. So, while not a bad signing, he’d require time and tactical coaching to truly replace what Cunha offers.

Samuel Lino (Atletico Madrid):

Lino brings a different dynamic to VP’s team compared to Matheus Cunha, with his explosive pace and ability to beat defenders one on one. He's most comfortable out wide, where he can isolate full backs and drive forward with the ball, offering a more direct and unpredictable threat than Cunha’s more measured, link up style. While that sort of raw attacking energy could be valuable for Pereira, especially in breaking down compact defences, Lino’s decision making and consistency in the final third remain question marks. He’s less suited to playing centrally or contributing to controlled possession phases, which are key to how Pereira’s side builds attacks. So while Lino could bring an exciting edge to the team, he'd be more of a wildcard option than a natural replacement for Cunha. However Lino could be an excellent replacement for the potential departure for Rayan-Ait-Nouri, who’s future at Wolves remains in question despite being in talks with Wolves over a brand new deal.

Gabriel Sara (Galatasaray):

Sara could be a great fit to replace Cunha in Vítor Pereira’s squad. His time at Norwich City showed just how capable he is, with 13 goals and 12 assists in the 2023–24 season, earning him a spot in the Championship Team of the Season. He’s a versatile player who can operate in central or attacking midfield roles, making him adaptable to various attacking positions. His work rate and pressing intensity match what Pereira tends to look for in his players, and he can contribute both in build up play and in the final third. Since moving to Galatasaray, he’s continued to perform at a high level, proving his ability to thrive in tougher competitions. With his skill set and experience, Sara has the potential to fill the gap left by Cunha effectively.

So, those are three potential Cunha replacements that Wolves have been linked to over the past few weeks, however…

Rumours and signings will be coming thick and fast so keep an eye out for potential new signings this upcoming transfer window via the Wolves Fancast.

Support our latest fundraiser for The Good Shepherd Wolverhampton by sharing or donating at the link below:

https://gsmwolverhampton.enthuse.com/pf/contentcreatorclassico25

@Joshy_WWFC on X gives his rundown on Wolves' latest signing, Fer Lopez.
