The deal is worth around £21 million, including a £19.3 million base fee and £1.7 million in add-ons. Although his release clause was set at €20 million, Wolves opted to pay slightly more in order to structure the transfer in installments, rather than activating the clause in one lump sum. López has signed a five-year contract and becomes one of the first major additions under head coach Vítor Pereira. It’s been made clear that López is not being brought in as a direct replacement for Cunha but rather as an exciting addition to enhance the squad’s creativity and depth. Wolves view him as a unique talent with his own style, meant to complement the existing attack rather than fill a specific void. He could face his former club as early as August 9, when Celta take on Wolves in a pre-season friendly.

López’s signing caused some stir within the Wolves fanbase, as many of the faithful couldn’t justify the price tag after playing only 20 senior games for Celta Vigo, but beneath the surface, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest this could be a smart, long term investment. Despite limited minutes, López was named Celta’s Estrella Galicia MVP in February, beating out club legend Iago Aspas, and earned plaudits in Spain for his composure and maturity on the ball. Spanish outlet AS described him as someone who “has everything to succeed in England,” highlighting his left footed creativity, 6'2" frame, and intelligent movement. Wolves have already seen success with a similar profile in Strand Larsen, and if López follows that path, the £21 million fee could quickly look like a bargain.

López is an extremely creative player, who would operate in the left-attacking midfield role in Vítor Pereira’s system. Technically sharp and intelligent in his movement, he thrives in tight spaces and excels at unlocking defences with precise final-third passing. In his own words, he “likes to play between the lines,” a trait that perfectly complements Pereira’s desire for fluid, vertical football and quick combinations around the box.

Despite his limited senior experience, López’s impact in possession has been striking. He currently ranks first in La Liga for successful through balls per 90 minutes, a clear indicator of his vision and confidence when threading passes between defensive lines. While the sample size is small, it reflects the kind of high ceiling talent Wolves are betting on. Surrounded by dynamic runners and a structured midfield of Andre and Joao Gomes behind him, López could quickly become the creative heartbeat of Pereira’s Wolves side.

Fer López’s departure from Celta Vigo has sparked significant backlash among Celta fans, many of whom saw him as their next big star after coming through the youth system and recently breaking into the first team. Supporters feel betrayed by the move, especially given the timing, as his release clause was set to double in just a couple weeks time. On social media, many fans voiced disappointment, accusing the club of prioritising financial gain over building a long term project around young talent. The involvement of agent Jorge Mendes, who has close ties to Wolves, also raised suspicions among some supporters about the motivations behind the transfer. López even had to issue a statement around how he didn’t push for this move, however in interviews with Wolves, he sounded delighted over the prospect of linking up with Larsen, and playing for such a great club, he even described the move as a “no brainer.”

Pre-season will give fans a good indication of how López will fit into the system, as many expect the Spaniard to take time to develop into such a physical league. However, his technical ability and intelligent movement already set him apart, and with Wolves’ supportive environment and Vítor Pereira’s guidance, there’s every reason to be optimistic. López has the potential to be a fan favourite at Molineux for years to come.

It’s that time of the year, as the season comes to a close and while we reflect on what has been a rollercoaster of emotions, the summer transfer window is rapidly approaching and Wolves are right in the thick of it.
